The Debating Society

The Debating Society was established in the year 2003.It is the oldest working society of Law College Dehradun.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:

1. The Debating Society aims to identify students who are interested in participating in debates representing the college at state and national level competitions.

2. All the activities undertaken by the society have been designed to serve as a platform for students to develop the effective communication.

3. Through various debates and seminars organized by the Debating Society, the students are also afforded an opportunity to inculcate managerial capabilities and organizational skills.

4. The topics and issues chosen for various debates and discussions are selected keeping in mind, the ever-present need for a Law student to be in touch with relevant social issues.

5. One of the foremost aims of the society is to develop and foster amongst its members qualities like team spirit, diligence, dedication and commitment.


Although the Society is represented by a core group of office-bearers, every student of the Law College is a member of the Debating Society. The Society provides an opportunity to the interested students to participate in the events organized from time to time.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

1. Seminar-On 25th May 2007, Seminar on ‘Right to Information’ under the benign presence of Dr.R.S. Tolia, Hon’ble Chairman of Uttarakhand Information Commission, Dr.Suchismita Sengupta Pandey, Deputy Secretary of Uttarakhand Information Commission and Hon’ble Mr.Justice K.D.Shahi(Retd.).

2. Inter-Collegiate Debate on ‘Reservation’ on 10th November,2006 in the benign presence of Hon’ble Mr.Justice I.P.Vashista, then Chairman, Legal Services Authority Uttarakhand; Dr.B.C.Upreti, Deputy Director, Higher Education of Uttarakhand.

3. Intra-Collegiate Debate on ‘Media Jan Adhikaron ka Atikarman kar raha hai’, under the esteemed presence of Sr.Journalist Mr.Jai Singh Rawat, Film and T.V. Producer Mr.Shiv Kumar Painuly and Director of U.I.M Dr.N.L.Gupta.

4. Inter-Collegiate Debate on 27th October 2007, titled ‘Anti Dowry Laws are Instruments of Blackmail’ in the benign presence of Hon’ble Mr.Justice S.R.A.Raza, then Lok Ayukta of Uttarakhand, Dehradun.

5. A Conclave on Regionalism titled ‘India… shall be a Union of States’ on the 6th of May, 2009 under the chairmanship of Hon’ble Mr.Justice M.M.Ghildiyal, Lok Ayukta of Uttarakhand.

CONCLAVE :

On the 6th of May, 2009, the Debating Society organized a conclave on Regionalism titled “India ….. Shall be a Union of States” in the premises of the college. Hon’ble Justice Mr. M.M. Ghildiyal, Lokayukt of Uttarakhand was the Chief Guest on the occasion.D.N.Bhatkoti,former Head of Political Science,D.A.V.(P.G.),College,Dehradun, Dr.Suchismita Sengupta Pandey,Secretary,Uttarakhand Information Commission, J.S.Micky,Senior Advocate, Rajeev Khanna, Principal Correspondent, Indian Express and Yogesh Bhatt,were klthe experts on the panel.

Students from various law colleges of Uttarakhand and other colleges of the Capital including the Indian Military Academy participated in the Conclave. The event was inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest. The topic of regionalism was divided into sub-topics and deliberated upon. The genesis and growth of regionalism were charted by the speakers who also analyzed the topic from diverse perspectives. Every speech was followed by queries from the audiences which were comprehensively dealt with by the esteemed panel of experts present. Besides the thought provoking speeches and conclusive summing up by the experts, the active participation of the audience added charm to the event.

Inter-Collegiate Debate Competition

The Debate Society of the college organized a number of debates at the college and the inter- collegiate level. It was very heartening to find a number of entries from the different colleges in the town. In the first English debate, on the motion, “In the present scenario reservations have no relevance”, a number of colleges of Dehradun participated. Megha Sharma, 4th year BA.LLB student of Law College Dehradun was adjudged the best speaker, Aman Rab, 5th year BA.LLB student of LAW College secured 2nd place and Nisha Dhar of Sai Institute came 3rd.

The Debate Society organized Hindi debate on the topic, Media Encroachment in personal life of the public figures. The matter was vociferously debated by the speakers. Vaishali Anand of BA.LLB 2nd year student of LAW College was declared as the best debater, the 1st runner-up was Pradeep Sati of BA.LLB 5th year and Hitesh Vihal was the 2nd runner-up, both of the same college. Subhashish Kukreti, final student of LLB won a special prize for asking the most relevant and thought provoking question on the topic under discussion.

Seminar on Right to Information Act

The students of Law College organized a seminar on RTI Act. A number of speakers presented their papers on the different aspects of RTI, ranging from the historical background of the act to its practical difficulties.

Chief Information commissioner Dr. R. S. Tolia, the chief guest in the seminar, in his keynote address complimented the students for the research and the effective manner in which they communicated the various aspects of the RTI.
